
Overview
High numbers of red blood cells may indicate:
- Cigarette smoking
- Low oxygen tension in the blood
- Congenital heart disease
- Cor pulmonale
- Pulmonary fibrosis
- Polycythemia vera
- Dehydration (such as from severe diarrhea)
- Emphysema
